Location

Washington, DC: Student Pugwash's 14th National Conference on Science and Social Responsibility will take place in the heart of the Nation's Capital. Student Pugwash is excited to host the conference in a location that will provide participants with access to the U.S. Congress, numerous nonprofits, and, of course, plenty of great tourist opportunities! Friday afternoon there will be an opportunity to visit scientists working on Capitol Hill, a science policy nonprofit, or a U.S. government facility.

If you've never visited D.C., plan to make time to check out some of the highlights before and after the conference.

The National Academies: The majority of the conference proceedings will take place at the Keck Center of the National Academies. The National Academies bring together committees of experts in all areas of scientific and technological endeavor. These experts serve pro bono to address critical national issues and give advice to the federal government and the public. Four organizations comprise the Academies: the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council.


Accommodations

Student Pugwash will provide lodging free of cost for all registered student conference participants from outside the D.C. Metro area. Lodging is available for Thursday, April 12, Friday, April 13, and Saturday, April 14. Student Pugwash will make your reservation for you; all you have to do is request lodging on the registration form. Rooms are shared with other student participants.

Neighborhood: The hotel is conveniently located on Capitol Hill, just minutes away from the U.S. Capitol and Congressional buildings, Union Station (access to Metro and Amtrak trains,) the National Mall, and the Smithsonian Museums. Union Station has a food court, shops, and several restaurants and provides access to Metro's Red Line and Amtrak trains. The hotel is only a ten minute walk from the Keck Center, where the conference will be held.

National Academies Keck Center: Most of the conference proceedings will be held at the National Academies Keck Center, conveniently located near the Judiciary Square and Gallery Place/ Chinatown Metro stations.

Ground Transportation

Washington DC's subway system, or Metro, can be easily accessed from the hotel. The closest station stop is Union Station on the Red Line. The closest station stop to the Keck Center is Judiciary Square, also on the Red Line. View a map of the Metro.

Directions from the Metro to the hotel:

  • Departing from Union Station (701 First Street NE), walk one block southwest on E St. NE.
  • E St. NE curves to the right, becoming E St NW.
  • Walk one block west on E St NW.
  • Turn left on New Jersey Avenue NW and walk one half block.
  • The hotel is on the left-hand side of the street.

Directions to the Keck Center from the Holiday Inn on the Hill:

  • Departing the hotel from the front entrance, turn right and walk a 1⁄2 block north on New Jersey Avenue NW
  • Turn left on E St. NW
  • Walk five blocks on E St NW to 5th St NW
  • Turn right on 5th St and walk a 1⁄2 block to the main entrance of the Keck Center at 500 5th St NW (on your left)

Directions to the Keck Center via Metro:

From the Red Line:

  • Exit from the Judiciary Square Metro station using the F St. exit
  • Walk about 1 block west on F St NW
  • Turn left on 5th St NW
  • Walk approximately 1 block south on 5th St NW


Air Travel

Students are responsible for their travel to and from the conference. Three airports service the Washington, DC region: Reagan National Airport (DCA), Dulles Airport (IAD), and Baltimore/Washington Airport (BWI). Reagan National Airport is the most accessible airport to the city, though you may find that the plane fares through this airport are higher than the others.

Directions from Reagan National Airport (DCA) to Holiday Inn on the Hill:

Via Metro:

  • Take the Yellow Line towards Mt Vernon Square.
  • Transfer at Gallery Place Chinatown/Verizon Center Station
  • Take the Red Line towards Silver Spring/Glenmont Metro
  • Exit at Union Station Metro.

A Super Shuttle or a taxi from DCA to the hotel are convenient options as well.

Via Metro/Bus: An affordable way to get from Dulles into D.C. is via the Metro and Washington Flyer bus.

  • Take the Washington Flyer Coach Service to West Falls Church Station for $9.
  • At the West Falls Church station, take the Orange Line towards New Carrollton for $3
  • Transfer at Metro Center station to the Red Line.
  • Take the Red Line towards Glenmont Metro.
  • Exit at Union Station Metro.

Directions from Baltimore Washington Airport (BWI) to Holiday Inn on the Hill:

Amtrak: Amtrak offers service between BWI airport and Washington DC Union Station. Visit www.amtrak.com for details.

Minimum cost: $12.
Approximate travel time: 30 minutes.

MARC commuter train: MARC trains only run on weekdays, and the last train leaves BWI rail station at 9:46 pm. Catch the free shuttle from BWI airport to BWI rail station, where you can catch the MARC train. MARC trains stops at Union Station, which is in walking distance of the hotel. Metrobus/Metrorail: This is an inexpensive way to travel from BWI to Union Station.

  • Catch the B30 bus towards Greenbelt Station outside of the airport terminal.
  • From the Greenbelt Station, take the Green Line train towards Branch Avenue.
  • Transfer at Fort Totten Metro Station to the Red Line toward Grosvenor/Shady Grove.

Colonial Parking Garage: The Colonial Parking Garage, located at 400 N Capitol St NW charges a maximum of $16 per day (from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm). This is the closest parking lot to the hotel, other than the hotel parking lot. If you will be parking your car after 4 pm on Thursday, the charge will be $10 until 6:00 am the next morning.
